How to Order: The Local Buffet Style

The restaurant operates without a fixed menu, following a traditional self-service system:

  1. Plate & Rice: Start with a plate and add as much rice as you like.
  2. Toppings: Help yourself to a variety of dishes from the buffet (Nasi Campur style).
Nasi Chanpuru: White rice + stewed beef + a few fried vegetables
Nasi campur
  1. Drinks & Payment: Once you’ve picked your food, head to the counter to order your drink and pay for your meal.
    • Alternatively, you can take a seat first. A staff member will come to your table to check your plate and give you a price slip.
    • Paying at the Counter: If you pay after eating or if no one comes to check your table, you will need to declare what you had. If you don’t speak the language, don’t worry—simply point to the dishes on your tray to show the staff what you’ve eaten. It’s a common and easy way to settle the bill!

Bonus Tip: The restaurant right next door (to the left) isn’t a buffet, but the prices are very reasonable and the food is delicious—definitely a great alternative to check out if when Kedai Babu is closed!

This restaurant is popular with Westerners who are struggling to find a breakfast, as it also serves toast.

Located along the scenic coastal road, Warung Manshor is a lively Malay eatery known for its flavorful stir-fry dishes. It’s a local character-filled spot where the meal comes with a side of island personality.

The Insider Scoop:

  • The Toast Hunters: During the off-season or on weekdays, finding a breakfast spot open in Teluk Nipah is a challenge—and finding one that serves toast is even rarer. Because of this, you’ll see many Western travelers flocking here specifically for their morning fix. However, keep in mind that prices have recently increased due to this demand; as a result, customer opinions are now split on whether the quality truly justifies the higher cost for outside visitors.
  • The Man in the Back: You’ll likely spot the cheerful owner relaxing at his favorite table at the back of the shop. He is the go-to person for more than just food; he also manages two guesthouses and the self-service laundrylocated just behind the restaurant. If you’re short on clean clothes or need a place to stay, he’s the man to talk to!
  • The “Secret" Non-Spicy Option: If you can’t handle the heat, try asking for Nasi Goreng Jepun (Japanese-style garlic fried rice with beef). It’s a hidden gem not on the menu, specifically for those who want zero spice.
    • Pro Tip: Since it’s a “secret" dish, the staff might occasionally claim they’ve “forgotten how to make it" or simply aren’t in the mood for the extra effort. If you get a polite “no," don’t push your luck—just pivot gracefully to the Nasi Goreng Cina (Chinese-style fried rice). It’s the reliable, mild alternative!
    • Note: Stir-fry dishes generally aren’t served until the lunch shift kicks in.
