This route also helps reduce travel time by avoiding heavy traffic in Kuala Lumpur (KL).
It is especially convenient for travelers who do not plan to stay overnight in Kuala Lumpur or who have a late-night return flight.

If you take a local bus from Sitiawan, board a bus bound for Seri Manjung, then transfer at the Seri Manjung bus terminal to a bus heading to Lumut (the journey takes approximately 55 minutes).

The last ferry departs at 7:15 PM (From Marina Island).
Please plan your trip so that you can catch the last ferry.

Kuala Lumpur to Pangkor Island

1. 🚗Car (Private, Rental, Taxi, Grab)

Advantages: Travel time is shorter than traveling by express bus, making it a faster option for getting to Pangkor Island.
Disadvantages: Fares are more expensive compared to express bus services.

KL→🚗Car (approx. 3~3.5 hours/highway) →Marina Island→⛴Ferry (15 minutes)

If you are driving your own car or renting one, we recommend parking at the paid parking lot on Marina Island before taking the ferry to Pangkor Island.
Although a car ferry is available, it is not recommended due to the island’s narrow roads and the limited availability of parking spaces on Pangkor Island.

Marina Island parking lot: Approximately Rm20/day, valet parking: Approximately Rm30/day

🌸Grab might be a good option for large groups!
🚙Grab (from about Rm400~)
take Grab from K.L (about 3.5 hours/highway) →Marina Island→ Ferry (15 minutes)

2. 🚌Express bus

Advantages: The most common and cost-effective route to Pangkor Island.
Disadvantages: Toilet breaks are short and limited.

🌸The most economical and simple
from K.L→🚌express bus(about 4.5 hours) →Lumut⛴ferry (30 minutes)

The express bus fare to Lumt is about Rm30 (online reservations start from about Rm28⁺)※As of 2025

Please refer to Express Bus from KL (Platform and how to buy tickets) .

🌸Recommended if there are no seats available on the earliest express bus to Lumut
🚌Express bus + Grab🚙(or Taxi)
K.L→🚌Express bus (approx. 4.25h)→🚏Seri Manjung→Grab🚙or Taxi🚕 (approx. 15min / approx. Rm8-10)→Marina Island→⛴Ferry(15min)

3. 🚊By Malayan Railway

Advantages: You can make a stop in Ipoh, a popular destination known for its food and sightseeing.
Disadvantages: This route requires multiple transfers, which may be inconvenient for some travelers.

🚊Train + 🚌Bus
KL Sentral Station →🚃ETS(約2.5h~3h)→Ipoh StationTerminal Kidd(suburban BT) Platform 1 →T30 Bus🚌(approx. 0.5 hours)→Amanjaya BT(long-distance BT)🚌Express bus(約1.5h)→Lumut→⛴Ferry(30min)

4. ✈️Air

Advantages: The flight time is approximately 45 minutes, making it a fast and convenient way to reach Pangkor Island.
Disadvantages: Flight availability is limited and depends on specific travel dates.

✈️By plane : Subang Airport (Malaysia domestic airport)
Subang Airport(Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah airport) :SZB⇔ PKG (Pangkor Airport)

Regular flights to Pangkor Island were discontinued around 2011.
By 2018, the runway at Pangkor Airport (PKG) had become overgrown with weeds, highlighting the airport’s inactivity.
However, as of 2024, limited flights to Pangkor Airport are operating again, typically only when a minimum number of passengers is met.

If you have a budget

🚕 Taxi from Kuala Lumpur city: approximately RM800–900.
🚙 Grab: around RM500++ (prices vary depending on the number of passengers and vehicle type).

In the case of a private car or rental car

I recommend using the paid parking facilities in Lumut or Marina Island.
Although a car ferry to Pangkor Island is available, I do not recommend bringing a vehicle onto the island, as many of the roads are narrow and parking spaces are limited.

From the southern, northern and east coast of the Malay Peninsula

1. First, find a bus route to the nearest Lumut bus station.

If there are no direct buses from your departure city—especially from the northern east coast such as Kota Bharu—consider traveling via major bus terminals along the route.

KL Sentral Departure Hall(KL CITY AIR TERMINAL)

There are only two flights to Pangkor Island, departing at 10:00 and 17:30, but this is the most recommended option for travelers staying near KL Sentral, especially if the flight schedule fits their itinerary.

Is it cold inside the express bus?

Essential Tips for a Comfortable Long-Distance Bus Trip
  1. Dress for “Micro-Climes"

To protect yourself from freezing bus air conditioning, always carry a lightweight, front-opening layer like a zip-up hoodie or a thin jacket. Having something easy to put on and take off is key to staying comfortable when the cabin temperature drops.

  1. Master Your Hydration and Restroom Routine

It’s a bit of a balancing act: the summer heat makes hydration essential, but the chilled air inside the bus can quickly trigger a need for a restroom.

Pro Tip: Always use the restroom immediately before boarding.

Be Prepared: I’ve personally had to request emergency stops at highway service areas multiple times—it’s a situation you definitely want to avoid!

  1. Don’t Get Left Behind: The 5-Minute Rule

Restroom breaks are often surprisingly short—sometimes only 5 minutes. Be aware that some bus drivers may depart without a headcount, so efficiency is everything.

  1. Communicate with Your Driver

To ensure your safety and stay on the driver’s radar, it’s a smart move to acknowledge the driver or let them know you are there when you step off the bus. A little communication goes a long way in making sure the bus doesn’t leave without you!

The air conditioning inside Malaysian express buses is generally too cold.

To Ferry Terminal from Bus Terminal

The walk from the bus terminal to the Pangkor Island ferry terminal takes just 2 to 3 minutes. However, the path isn’t always obvious for first-time visitors. To avoid getting lost, it’s best to check a map.

How to get from Bus Terminal to the ferry terminal

  1. Head toward the express bus ticket counters located at the far end of the terminal (the opposite side from the public toilets 🚻).
  2. Keep walking straight, keeping the ticket counters on your right-hand side.
  3. Continue straight through what used to be the food court-style restaurant area.
  4. You’ll reach a narrow road; simply cross it to reach the other side.
The red dotted line is the shortest route from the bus terminal to the ferry terminal.
In wet weather, we recommend using the arcade on the left for cover.
Lumut Bus Terminal  Ferry Terminal Route
  1. Go straight through the parking lot to your right—but if you have rolling luggage, I’d recommend the covered passage inside the building on the left. It’s a much smoother walk!
  2. Cross the street when you hit the main road, then just follow the bend around to the left. On rainy days, taking the arcade on the left is a great shortcut to stay dry.
  3. Cross the road and head left past the souvenir shops; you’ll find the ferry terminal and ticket counter just ahead.

Please be wary of touts offering hotel bookings or marine activities around the bus and ferry terminals. To ensure a smooth trip, I recommend booking through official channels instead.

How to buy ferry tickets

Make sure to buy a round-trip ticket at the ticket counter, which you’ll find on the right side of the ferry terminal.

※ The timetable will be displayed at the link (easybook.com).

No need to stick to your original return time! Just go to the port ticket counter when departing Pangkor Island to update your ferry schedule. This service is free and available right at the jetty.
*It may be difficult to change your return flight during busy periods such as weekends.

  1. Enter some basic personal information on the PC located opposite the ticket counter.
  2. After completing the entry, make a note of the “Registration Booking ID" that appears on the screen.
The easiest way to do this is to take a photo of it with your smartphone.
  3. Show your “Registration Booking ID" to the staff at the ticket counter opposite to purchase your ticket.

📝 Don’t lose your ticket stub, as it is required for your return journey from Pangkor Island.

📝 During peak periods like weekends and public holidays, ferries can be fully booked. To secure your spot and avoid the queues, it’s best to make an online reservation ahead of time.

Please note that ferry services to Sungai Pinang Kecil have been discontinued since January 2024. The boat will no longer make its previous stop there, so make sure to check the updated ferry route before boarding.

Once you board the ferry, please place any large suitcases in the designated luggage area near the entrance. Don’t be surprised if other passengers stack their bags on top of yours—it’s quite common!
Also, while you’ll see seat numbers near the windows, all seating is unreserved, so feel free to pick any spot you like.

Pangkor Jetty (Port of Pangkor Island)

Enjoy a peaceful 25-30minute ferry trip (10-15 minutes via Marina Island) to Pangkor Island. After docking at the terminal, follow the pier straight and take a left turn. You will see the taxi stand.

Tip: Look for the signature Pink Taxis at the stand—they are the most common way to get around the island!

🚕Taking a taxi is the best option

While Pangkor Town-based hotels are within walking distance, other areas of the island are less accessible on foot. If you aren’t staying centrally, walking to your lodging is not recommended due to the island’s terrain and distance.

taxi stand

  1. Once off the ferry, cross the pier and turn left.
  2. Walk along the waterfront; the ticket office and souvenir shop building will be right ahead.
  3. Taxi drivers gather near the exit on the right side, just before the main building.
  4. Let them know where you’re headed, and they will escort you to the taxi stand.
  5. The taxis are hard to miss—they’re bright pink vans! (Note: These are non-air-conditioned.)

Please be aware that if you choose to use an unlicensed motorbike taxi or car, you do so entirely at your own risk.

taxis are pink

While fares from the pier depend on the accommodation area, they are flat rates within each zone. The price is identical whether your destination is a hotel or the beach, so simply tell the driver “Hotel name in [sucha as Pasir Bogak,Teluk Nipah]" when you board.

Tabibito001

Pro-tip to avoid any travel headaches:
Fares for Pangkor Island taxis are based on destination and passenger count rather than a meter. If you’re solo or with a partner, don’t be surprised if the driver invites others to join the ride. To avoid any confusion or unexpected surcharges at your destination, it’s essential to clarify the fare with the driver before stepping inside.
